Food Banker Spotlight – Al Huckaby

We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Al Huckaby from the Dryden Food Bank in Dryden, Ontario.

What is your role in food banking?

Manager of the Dryden Food Bank in Dryden, Ontario.

What are your pronouns?

He/Him/Mr.

Describe a typical day in one word.

Gratifying.

What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?

I was part of the board that gave oversight to the Dryden Food Bank gaining it’s charitable status. Back in the 1990s, we saw a need to assist people struggling with food insecurity and wanted to create a way in which the community could help meet that need.

What is your greatest challenge in your current role?

Warehouse space for food and the ability to safely handle this influx of food. There is a great responsibility when one is given much. Our desire is to work alongside other agencies that could benefit from our excess food so that they can help those in need.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Understanding how computers work!

If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?

Surround yourself with people you admire and allow them to speak wisdom into your life (whether you like it or not).

Who are your heroes? Fictional or real life.

My father who showed me how to be strong yet compassionate to people. I wish he was still alive so that I could have more in-depth talks with him about life.

What is your idea of happiness?

Having a loving wife, family that is close and peace in my life, knowing I’m right where I am to be.

What is your motto?

Relieving Hunger, Renewing Hope

Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?

I enjoy doing renovations on my home… I find it challenging and yet fulfilling.
