International Day of Families - Get involved with Every Plate Full!
International Day of Families is an opportunity to reflect on the issues and consider the challenges, as well as opportunities, that are facing families across the world.

At Food Banks Canada, understanding the economic and social forces that shape a family is part of understanding how support systems, such as food banks, can contribute to a family’s well-being, happiness, and health.

Recently, when a donor was asked why she gives to Food Banks Canada, she revealed a very touching and remarkable story.

“Many years ago, when I was a struggling single mother, with 3 children, it was the Food Bank that came to my rescue in a very special way.
I was living in South Vancouver and, in those days, I was even spared embarrassing my children as the food truck delivered two grocery bags full of food to my back door, every week. It was that extra food that allowed me to spend what little money I had on healthy fruit and vegetables for my very tall, hungry kids.
I received fresh milk, bread, peanut butter, jam, canned vegetables, cereal, soup, spaghetti and the occasional sweet treat for the kids. I was always treated with kindness and respect, which my self-esteem badly needed.
I am working now so I have doubled my support from last year. I will continue to support Food Banks Canada with much love and appreciation. My heartfelt thanks to all the people behind the scenes that work for a very important and needed cause.”

Currently, Food Banks Canada is championing a nation-wide campaign to help families like Val’s find the support they need to get through a particularly challenging time of the year- the summer months.

It is estimated that 918,000 people will turn to a food bank for support this summer with a total need of 26.5 million meals.  Filling this meal gap is what Every Plate Full is all about.
