Recycle a phone, help stock food bank shelves for Thanksgiving: Fido joins Phones-For-Food program Postage-paid recycling envelopes now included in-box with wireless devices from Fido
Toronto, November 1, 2007 - Hunger Count 2007 AlertToronto, Oct. 4, 2007- Just in time for Thanksgiving, Fido today announced that it has joined Rogers Wireless in the Phones-For-Food program as national wireless sponsor, in partnership with the Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB). All Fido devices will be sold with postage-paid recycling envelopes to make donating old phones even easier.
The Phones-for-Food program was launched in 2003 as an initiative by the CAFB to help alleviate hunger and divert electronic waste from landfill sites. One donated wireless device, depending on its age and condition, can generate up to $5 for food banks - equivalent to the cost of a jar of peanut butter or carton of milk.
"Fido is thrilled to be joining Rogers Wireless as national wireless sponsor of the Phones-for-Food program. As part of Canada's largest wireless network, we are able to give our combined 7 million customers, plus new customers, a convenient way to recycle their phones," said Sylvain Roy, Senior VP and GM, Fido. "The importance of the Phones-for-Food program cannot be underestimated: not only is it helping to save our environment by diverting e-waste from landfills, it also generates much-needed funds for our food banks. We encourage all customers to help make a difference by donating their used wireless devices."
"Although the need exists all year round, Thanksgiving is a time when the demand on food banks in Canada is especially apparent," said Katharine Schmidt, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Food Banks. "Each month over 700,000 people are seeking assistance from food banks in Canada. The Phones-for-Food program is making a difference in keeping our food banks shelves stocked all year round. The commitment of national wireless sponsors Fido and Rogers Wireless to this program gives food banks access to unrestricted funds to purchase much needed food supplies."
Starting now, postage-paid recycling envelopes are included in box with select Fido devices. By end of year, all Fido devices will include an envelope in box. Existing wireless customers can visit www.phonesforfood.com and download a postage-paid mailing label.

About the Canadian Association of Food Banks Founded in 1985, the Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB) is an umbrella organization representing a national network of regional and community food banks, including provincial associations and food distribution centres. CAFB is the voice of food banks in Canada, with members and their respective agencies serving approximately 90 % of people accessing emergency food programs nation-wide. In the month of March 2006, over 753,000 different people accessed food banks, 41 % are children. In 2006, the CAFB moved over 8.5 million pounds of food industry donations to its members through the National Food Sharing System, with a dollar value equivalent of $17 million. In addition to food received from the CAFB, community-run food banks rely primarily on volunteers to collect and distribute an estimated 150 million pounds of food per year. CAFB conducts research, engages in public education and advocates for public policy change to eliminate the causes of hunger and food insecurity in Canada.
