No Space For Hunger Holiday Gift
No Space For Hunger
The Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB) is thrilled to accept a very generous holiday gift from ING Real Estate. Throughout December ING Real Estate employees from across Canada volunteered their time at local food banks and held competitive food drives. On December 19 ING made a $100,000 donation to the CAFB and member food banks as part of their commitment to No Space for Hunger on behalf of their tenants and employees in Halifax, N.S.
"This is a wonderful gift that will make a significant difference to struggling families and individuals right across Canada", said Katharine Schmidt, Executive Director of the CAFB. "More than 720,000 Canadians rely on food banks each month." Food banks assist Canadians in every province and territory including growing cities, small towns, and rural and northern communities. 51% of households receiving food assistance are families with at least one child. Between 1997 and 2007, the number of people using food banks increased by 8.4%.
The No Space for Hunger campaign involves a unique approach to giving to the food bank community. In addition to ING Real Estates employee food drives, volunteering, and donation of funds, the company has also offered warehouse space for food bank use, all creating an opportunity for increased awareness of the CAFB, its member food banks, and the importance of giving back to the communities in which we live. Food banks in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, London, Montreal, Ottawa and Halifax were very appreciative of the assistance during their busiest time of the year.
