Development of this project began in 2006 as part of Food Banks Canada’s national initiative to provide food bank clients with safe, good quality food while ensuring food donations are being handled correctly. Food Banks Canada has designed a comprehensive program to assist our Members and Affiliate Members in becoming educated on safe methods of handling and moving food through our supply chain. The standards and training and education materials have been created with the assistance of a Safe Food Handling Steering Committee and input from food manufacturers, transportation supplier, food recovery companies, the food bank community, and government agencies. Food Banks Canada believes many of the standards developed can be implemented easily and quickly and can dramatically improve our Members and Affiliate Members’ ability to distribute food safely. This program has been tested in several food banks across the country, and their suggestions have been included within these documents.
Below you will find our Standards guidelines, a Food Bank Audit form for use in your facility, posters to be used to train your volunteers, and a donor intake form for use to assist with food donations. We encourage you to review this information, and consider how you can begin to implement these standards. Food Banks Canada will also be rolling out a training program to food banks in the near future.
